Everyone Needs Biblical Counseling…
We offer Biblical Counseling as a free service to those who call New Hope Baptist Church home. We believe that all scripture is inspired by God and is sufficient to address any problem that we may face (2 Timothy 3:16). We are excited to offer this ministry not only to our church body but to our extended family of believers in our community as well, because we want to share the riches of knowing and experiencing Jesus Christ with everyone as the word and Spirit of God work together to transform the child of God enabling us to live a God glorifying life filled with joy and peace (Galatians 5:22-23).
The Process
Complete the online biblical counseling application.
When you fill out the online application for biblical counseling, be as honest and detailed as possible so we can prayerfully discern which counselor or counselors would be best suited to assist with the situation you are facing.
Schedule the first session.
We will check the counselors’ available times and will set up a time to meet with you. We understand in many cases there’s a sense of urgency and we will do our best to schedule you in a timely manner.
How Do I Get the Most Out of Biblical Counseling?
Pray for a Learner’s Attitude (Matthew 7:7-11).
It’s easy for us to see the sin of our neighbor. That’s often our personal goal to make our circumstances better by changing our neighbor instead of focusing on self. In many cases you may be right, however we must own our part of the issue. An attitude of humility promotes healing.
Pray for Humility (1 Peter 5:6).
God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble (James 4:6). Our aim must be to bring Glory to God. We do this by clothing ourselves with humility, with our sin ever before us, admitting our helpless state and asking for Gods help.
Commit to Completing Homework Assignments.
We like to start the biblical counseling process with the end in mind. We only spend an hour or so a week with you so it’s a necessity to do the work we send you home with. There may be reading assignments, verse memorization, etc. as part of the process to get you where the LORD wants you to be (Psalm 119:11)
Be patient with the process.
It will require hard work and in most cases a few months to get to the place you would like to be. If you are not a part of our church family this will make the process a little more difficult because we may not know you. We need to understand your history and patterns in your life, so be prepared for us to ask and you to answer lots of questions. Our understanding helps us find biblical solutions for the problems you are faced with (Proverbs 18:13).
Things That You Can Do to Help the Biblical Counseling Process.
Get in the Habit of Exercising Spiritual Disciplines.
1) Attend Small Group Classes (Sunday School) and Worship Services.
Being created in the image of GOD, we are relational beings. It has never been GOD’s intention for us to live life alone. Fellowship of the saints is a wonderful gift from our LORD that HE requires us to participate in (Hebrews 10:24-25).
2) Daily Scripture Intake
The Word of GOD (Psalm 119:105) and the SPIRIT of GOD (John 14:26) transform the Child of GOD by the renewal of our minds (Romans 12:2). So daily bible reading is essential for the believer to protect from the evil schemes of Satan (Eph. 6:11).
3) Scripture Memorization and Praise in Song (Psalm 119:11, Psalm 66:1-2)
King David expresses the infinite value of GOD’s Word to him personally in Psalm 119. The apostle Paul exhorts us to, “Let the words of CHRIST dwell in us richly” (Col 3:16). Meditation, memorization, and singing praises to our LORD shifts the focus from our self and our circumstances to the Great Glorious GOD that saved us by sending HIS SON when we were helpless to do so ourselves! JESUS has rescued us from our biggest problem!
4) Prayer (1 Thessalonians 5:17-18)
Prayer is an expression of faith and is commanded in scripture. When a believer prays, they are partaking in a gift of grace that GOD freely offers and encourages us to partake. Prayer is something we can do as we navigate our day. When we make requests to GOD with the right motives, HE is faithful to answer our prayers (James 4: 2-3).
5) Pursue a Relationship with Jesus Christ
The goal of biblical counseling is to point the counselee to Jesus Christ. In HIM alone we find the strength and desire to make the necessary changes that we need to make (John 15:5). Changes we make apart from Christ are temporary behavioral modifications at best. We foster a relationship with Jesus Christ by exercising the above mentioned disciplines as we find rest in what HE has accomplished for us by HIS work HE done while with us here on earth.
